Scandals erupt in Bengal Medical Colleges amid RG Kar Case

Corruption and intimidation allegations shake Bengal Medical Colleges amid RG Kar Rape-Murder Case

The rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has triggered a wave of complaints and protests across West Bengal's medical colleges. Students from at least seven major institutions have come forward with serious allegations of corruption, favoritism, and political influence tied to the ruling Trinamool Congress. They claim that bribery and threats of failure are being used to manipulate exams and control house staff selections.

Corruption and intimidation allegations

Students reported being forced to pay bribes for registration with the West Bengal Medical Council, facing unfair grading, and being coerced into participating in hospital events. Many fear for their future careers due to the alleged manipulation of the examination system and favoritism in medical appointments. The complaints have led to multiple investigations by both the state government and individual colleges.

Protests and investigations continue

The scandal gained more attention following the arrest of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh in September. Investigations into corruption are underway, with a recent panel at RG Kar finding 40 doctors guilty of intimidation. Several students from North Bengal Medical College and Kalyani College of Medicine have been suspended for protesting the situation, intensifying calls for urgent reforms in Bengal’s medical education system.
